JOB DESCRIPTION

A Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Technician is a professional responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of ground support equipment used in aviation. GSE includes a variety of vehicles and equipment essential for servicing, maintaining, and handling aircraft on the ground.

QUALIFICATIONS

Entrants usually possess GCSEs/S grades or a BTEC/SQA award. Apprenticeships in Engineering Maintenance at Level 3 are available. NVQs/SVQs are available at Level 2 and 3.

TASKS

  • Adhere to environmental regulations and best practices when handling and disposing of hazardous materials, fluids, and waste generated during maintenance..
  • Collaborate with other GSE technicians, aircraft maintenance personnel, and airport operations staff to coordinate equipment maintenance activities..
  • Conduct safety inspections on GSE to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations..
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in ground support equipment, ensuring timely and effective repairs..
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize equipment downtime and extend the lifespan of GSE..
  • Maintain and repair aircraft fuelling equipment, including fuel trucks, hydrant carts, and fuelling hoses..
  • Maintain and repair GPUs that provide electrical power to parked aircraft on the ground..
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and parts replacements for documentation and regulatory compliance..
  • Overhaul and repair diesel and gasoline engines commonly found in GSE vehicles, ensuring optimal performance..
  • Perform maintenance on wheels, tires, and brake systems of GSE vehicles to ensure proper functionality..
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on ground support equipment, including inspection, lubrication, and component replacements..
  • Service and repair air conditioning and heating systems installed on GSE, especially equipment used for aircraft cabin conditioning..
  • Service and repair hydraulic systems on equipment such as ground power units (GPUs), tow tractors, and hydraulic lifts..
  • Service and repair tow tractors and pushback tugs used to move aircraft on the ground..
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems on GSE, including lighting, control panels, and electronic components..
  • Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and address issues with engines, transmissions, brakes, and other systems..
  • Utilize welding and fabrication skills to repair or modify GSE components and structures..
